Self Learning Guitar Questions (abt 3)?
I have been teaching myself to play guitar from the Hal Leonard Guitar Method Book 1. In Book two it has stuff about Finger Picking ….
I am learning on an electric guitar so do I need learn the finger picking?
Is Finger PIcking easier on accoustic or is it the same to learn no matter which?
How long do you think it would take to go from ” Never finger picked in my life” to being adequate?
You can finger-pick on either acoustic or electric. I’ll bet that the *style* of finger-picking that’s in the Hal Leonard book is more typical of acoustic folk music than electric……BUT>>> you should learn it anyway. One of the dangers of self-learning is the temptation to pick and choose what to learn. This can leave holes in your knowledge. In the case of finger-picking, the STYLE may not be of interest to you but the SKILL will be useful no matter what genre of music you play.
As you progress, you’ll find that even when you’re using a pick, there are times you need to ask your fingers to help out. Also, by learning to finger-pick, you’ll get a better feel for where each string is….even when you’re using a pick.
I can’t say how long it will take you to master it…..but I can tell you that it’s all about muscle memory. Repeat every motion slowly and accurately. This will burn the memory into your brain. Speed will come later. In my Earl Scruggs learn-to-play-banjo book , he gives you small picking patterns and makes the notation “Repeat 100x”
